India and the United States are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement, which has yet to be finalized. The Indian government is ensuring that all sensitivities related to the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are taken into account and that national interests are protected, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, shared in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that &ldquo;every FTA is unique and tailored to the specific dynamics of trade between countries, aiming to maximize mutual benefits.&rdquo; He confirmed that discussions with the US are still ongoing and no agreement has been signed yet.
The government emphasized that FTAs only come into force after signing and ratification by both parties. Intense deliberations are underway to potentially reach an interim trade deal between India and the US before the August 1 deadline.
Regarding the India-UK trade pact, Prasada informed that the Prime Ministers of both nations announced the successful conclusion of FTA negotiations on May 6, 2025. He described the agreement as a modern and comprehensive accord that will deepen economic integration while providing extensive market access and tariff concessions across all major sectors.
The FTA aims to strengthen regulatory practices and boost transparency, aligning with India&rsquo;s domestic reform agenda and the goal of enhancing ease of doing business.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi to London this week for the formal signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s official visit to the UK, at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will take place from July 23 to 24. This will be Modi&rsquo;s fourth visit to the United Kingdom.
The agreement is expected to significantly boost India&rsquo;s export potential in key labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, marine products, leather, footwear, sports goods, toys, and also in sectors like engineering goods, auto components, and organic chemicals.
