India has announced the reopening of its embassy in Kabul, upgrading its existing technical mission to a full diplomatic mission. This move follows India&rsquo;s closure of its embassy and consulates in Afghanistan in August 2021, after the Taliban assumed control of the government. India had maintained a limited diplomatic presence since 2022 through a technical team stationed in Kabul.
The announcement came during a bilateral meeting between India&rsquo;s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghanistan&rsquo;s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi. This marks the first high-level diplomatic engagement between the two nations since the Taliban takeover and the US troop withdrawal in 2021.
The reopening of the embassy signifies India&rsquo;s commitment to Afghanistan&rsquo;s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development. Strengthening diplomatic ties and closer cooperation between the two countries is expected to contribute to regional stability and resilience. India&rsquo;s support in recent humanitarian crises, including earthquakes in Afghanistan, reinforces its role as a key partner and neighbor.
