India on Tuesday launched a strong attack on Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council, drawing a direct link between Islamabad&rsquo;s internal political turmoil and its long-standing involvement in cross-border terrorism. Addressing the UNSC Open Debate on &ldquo;Leadership for Peace&rdquo;, India&rsquo;s Permanent Representative highlighted what New Delhi described as Pakistan&rsquo;s erosion of democracy and accountability.
India pointed to the imprisonment of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, the ban on his political party, and the expanding role of the military in Pakistan&rsquo;s political and constitutional framework. The Indian envoy referred to Khan&rsquo;s continued incarceration since August 2023 in a high-value corruption case, along with multiple trials under anti-terror laws linked to the May 2023 unrest. Concerns raised by UN officials regarding Khan&rsquo;s treatment in custody were also cited.
India further criticised constitutional changes in Pakistan that restructured the military and judicial systems, alleging that these amendments granted lifetime immunity to the country&rsquo;s Chief of Defence Forces, General Asim Munir. According to India, these developments reflect a systematic undermining of democratic institutions.
The Indian delegation also firmly rejected Pakistan&rsquo;s repeated references to Jammu and Kashmir at the UN, reiterating that Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India. New Delhi described Pakistan&rsquo;s focus on the issue as an attempt to divert attention from its own domestic and international failings.
Highlighting Pakistan&rsquo;s record on terrorism, India described the country as a global hub for terror networks. It defended its decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, citing decades of conflict, wars, and terror attacks emanating from Pakistani territory, including the April 2025 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
Beyond bilateral issues, India renewed its call for urgent reforms of the United Nations Security Council. Describing the current structure as outdated, the Indian envoy stressed the need for time-bound, text-based negotiations to make the Council more representative, transparent, and effective in addressing present-day global challenges.
