India&rsquo;s rice export sector has been severely affected by the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, with shipments to Iran nearly coming to a standstill, exporters reported on Friday.
Narendra Miglani, a leading rice exporter, told IANS that around 1 lakh metric tonnes of basmati rice from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are stranded at Indian ports. &ldquo;The war has disrupted our supply route to Iran, halting exports completely,&rdquo; he said.
India is a major exporter of basmati rice to Iran, followed by Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Miglani noted that the conflict has also caused a sharp ₹1,200 per quintal drop in rice export prices.
Adding to exporters&rsquo; woes are payments stuck in Iran and uninsured rice containers languishing at terminals. With export permits valid for only four months, failure to deliver the shipments in time could result in cancellations and severe financial losses.
A Crisil report highlighted that while India&rsquo;s total trade with Israel and Iran is under 1% of its overall global trade, both nations together account for nearly 14% of India&rsquo;s basmati rice exports in FY25.
The report further warned that if the geopolitical crisis continues, it could lead to higher oil prices, supply chain disruptions, and inflationary pressure on the Indian economy.
