India&rsquo;s mineral production has continued its upward trajectory in FY 2025-26, building on the record-breaking performance of the previous financial year.
Iron ore, which contributes around 70% of the country&rsquo;s total mineral output by value, reached 289 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY 2024-25 &mdash; surpassing the previous high of 277 MMT in FY 2023-24, marking a 4.3% growth.
Provisional estimates for April 2025 &mdash; the first month of FY 2025-26 &mdash; indicate sustained momentum in mineral output compared to the same period last year.
Bauxite production rose significantly by 13.9%, from 1.87 MMT in April 2024 to 2.13 MMT in April 2025. Limestone production increased by 1.2%, reaching 40.5 MMT, up from 39.58 MMT. Lead and zinc ore output saw a 2.4% rise, moving from 1.24 MMT to 1.27 MMT, while zinc concentrate production grew by 7.7% to 0.14 MMT.
In the non-ferrous metal segment, primary aluminium production increased by 1.5% year-on-year, reaching 3.47 lakh tonnes (LT) in April 2025, compared to 3.42 LT in April 2024. Refined copper production saw a substantial jump of 15.6%, rising from 0.45 LT to 0.52 LT during the same period.
India remains the second-largest aluminium producer globally and is among the top ten producers of refined copper. The continued rise in the production of these metals reflects ongoing robust demand from key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, construction, automotive, and machinery.
In March 2025, several minerals also recorded notable year-on-year growth. Iron ore production increased by 5.7% to 25.9 MMT. Manganese ore output climbed by 9.7% to 0.39 MMT, while zinc concentrate production grew by 5.5%, reaching 0.19 MMT.
