In a compelling video address at the prestigious 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Awards in Mumbai, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar outlined a bold and assertive vision for India's place in the global order. "Independence should never be confused with neutrality," Jaishankar declared emphatically, stressing that India will not bow to external pressures or allow its decisions to be vetoed by other nations. He emphasised that every policy decision would prioritise India's national interests while contributing to global welfare.
The Minister addressed India's rising global stature, noting how deeply embedded India has become in international consciousness. "When India becomes more deeply embedded in global consciousness, its impact resonates profoundly across international spheres," he stated. Jaishankar also highlighted India's unique potential to offer solutions to contemporary global issues, including unhealthy lifestyles, stress, and climate change, drawn from its ancient heritage.
On the delicate balance between progress and tradition, Jaishankar argued for a synergy between modern technology and cultural authenticity. "Bharat will inevitably progress, but it must do so without losing its Bharatiyata," he asserted, using the Sanskrit name for India to emphasise the inseparability of cultural identity from national advancement.
He also challenged historical narratives that have portrayed progress as incompatible with heritage, suggesting that such misconceptions have often hindered India's development trajectory. Instead, Jaishankar advocated for an integrated approach, where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously.
The 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Awards honour excellence across public leadership, science and technology, community service, human endeavour, and social adership. Named after the revered 68th Seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, the awards celebrate a blend of spiritual and professional achievements.
Though unable to attend the ceremony in person, Jaishankar's video address struck a powerful chord with attendees. His speech painted a vision of a confident India&mdash;one that retains its sovereign decision-making power while actively contributing to global solutions and welfare.
