India has emerged as one of the top five oil refining nations globally, backed by 23 world-class refineries with a combined capacity of 258.2 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). The country&rsquo;s refining journey reflects a strong push toward growth, innovation, and energy self-reliance.
According to Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, India&rsquo;s refineries not only meet domestic demand but also supply global markets, marking a significant step in the nation&rsquo;s energy evolution. In FY 2024&ndash;25, petroleum product exports climbed to 64.7 million tonnes, compared to 55.5 million tonnes in 2014&ndash;15, showing steady expansion in output and efficiency.
All Indian refineries now produce BS-VI compliant fuels, among the cleanest globally. The government&rsquo;s new petrochemical hubs in Rajasthan and Odisha are further strengthening India&rsquo;s position as a future-ready energy powerhouse under Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s leadership.
India is targeting a refining capacity of around 310 MMTPA by 2030, with a long-term vision of reaching 400&ndash;450 MMTPA, making it a major global energy and petrochemical hub. The expansion comes at a time when nearly 20 per cent of the world&rsquo;s refineries face potential shutdowns by 2035, giving India a strong competitive edge.
Currently, India ranks among the top seven exporters of petroleum products, exporting to more than 50 countries with a trade value exceeding $45 billion in FY 2024&ndash;25. Nearly 80 per cent import substitution has already been achieved across the energy value chain through innovation and indigenization.
Puri emphasized that India&rsquo;s energy strategy focuses on a balanced transition&nbsp;integrating sustainability with fuel and petrochemical growth. While traditional fuels will gradually decline in share, they will remain crucial to India&rsquo;s development goals through 2047 and beyond.
