India has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026&ndash;2028 term, marking its seventh term on the Geneva-based body. The election, held on Tuesday, reaffirmed India&rsquo;s role as a key voice for democratic values and human rights on the global stage.
Announcing the results, the UNHRC said India&rsquo;s three-year term will officially begin on January 1, 2026. India&rsquo;s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, expressed gratitude to member nations for their overwhelming support, saying, &ldquo;India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026&ndash;28 for the seventh time today.&rdquo;
He added that the re-election reflects India&rsquo;s &ldquo;unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms&rdquo; and promised to continue working toward advancing those objectives during its tenure.
India, which last served on the UNHRC in 2024, took a year&rsquo;s break in line with council rules prohibiting three consecutive terms. Since the Council&rsquo;s inception in 2006, India has served six terms in 2006&ndash;2007, 2008&ndash;2010, 2012&ndash;2014, 2015&ndash;2017, 2019&ndash;2021, and 2022&ndash;2024, consistently earning strong international support.
Other nations elected alongside India for the 2026&ndash;2028 term include Angola, Chile, Egypt, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
