India witnessed a 29% year-on-year increase in new company registrations in May 2025, with 20,718 firms added, according to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs' latest bulletin. This sharp rise signals an acceleration in economic activity across sectors.
The total registered companies in India now stand at 28.96 lakh, with 65% (18.9 lakh) of them actively operating &mdash; a 0.2% increase from April. A sectoral breakdown shows most new entities belong to community, personal, and social services (27%), followed by trading (17%), manufacturing (15%), and business services (15%).
Maharashtra led the state-wise count with 3,458 registrations (17%), followed by Uttar Pradesh (11%) and Delhi (9%).
On the foreign front, India hosts 5,247 registered foreign companies, with 63% actively functioning. Between March and May 2025, 28 new overseas entities registered&mdash;most in Karnataka (21%), Haryana and Maharashtra (18% each), and Gujarat (14%).
HSBC&rsquo;s Flash PMI also highlighted a strong rebound in private sector output in June, with employment hitting an 18-year high thanks to robust domestic and international demand.
These developments point towards a buoyant business environment and rising investor confidence in the Indian economy.
