India has formally expressed concerns to US Senator Lindsey Graham regarding a proposed bill that could impose steep tariffs&mdash;up to 500%&mdash;on nations importing Russian oil, including India.
The bill aims to penalise countries continuing trade with Russia, especially in energy, unless Moscow agrees to peace terms in the Ukraine conflict. India, which has maintained strong energy ties with Russia, could face a significant economic impact if the bill advances.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during a recent visit to Washington, said that India has been in communication with Senator Graham and other key members of the US Congress. New Delhi has highlighted how such legislation could affect its energy security and strategic interests.
The proposed legislation reportedly enjoys the support of over 80 senators, enough to pass even in the event of a presidential veto. While it threatens high tariffs on Russian trading partners, the bill also includes a carveout for nations supporting Ukraine&rsquo;s defence, potentially shielding them from penalties.
India&rsquo;s position has remained clear since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war: energy purchases from Russia are driven by national interest, and any decision must balance economic and geopolitical realities.
Republican leaders are currently awaiting the green light from former President Donald Trump, who is widely expected to play a key role in shaping US foreign and economic policy if re-elected.
