India and Canada signalled a reset in bilateral ties at the Johannesburg G20 Summit, agreeing to pursue deeper cooperation across trade, technology and investment. In talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a shared target of USD 50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, nearly double the current figures. Both sides agreed to accelerate negotiations on a high-ambition CEPA, while Canadian pension funds reportedly continue to expand interest in Indian markets.
On the sidelines, India and Italy unveiled a new joint initiative to combat terror financing, marking a significant addition to their growing strategic partnership. Modi said both nations would collaborate closely at platforms such as FATF and GCTF, calling the move &ldquo;necessary and timely&rdquo; for strengthening global counter-terror mechanisms. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity with India over the recent terror attack in Delhi.
India also deepened engagement with Japan, with PM Sanae Takaichi and PM Modi agreeing to intensify cooperation in semiconductors, defence, AI, critical minerals and talent mobility. Modi described the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership as rooted in &ldquo;shared values, mutual trust and goodwill,&rdquo; adding that stronger trade ties were essential for future growth.
In a separate meeting, Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed their commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South. Both sides reviewed progress in food security, investment, mining, and youth exchange, and pledged to boost collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure and emerging technologies. Modi thanked South Africa for steering the G20 Summit to consensus, particularly on priorities such as climate finance, anti-terror efforts, and inclusive development.
