Two years after tensions cooled relations between India and Canada over the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand landed in New Delhi Sunday evening for her first official visit as Foreign Minister. Her arrival signals a deliberate step toward the normalisation of ties between the two nations.
On Monday, Anand is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation. &ldquo;This visit will help build on the positive momentum in India-Canada relations by revitalising our bilateral mechanisms, deepening economic cooperation, and further strengthening the enduring people-to-people ties that anchor our partnership,&rdquo; said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Anand&rsquo;s stop in Delhi is the first leg of a three-nation tour that will also take her to China and Singapore. In Delhi, discussions are expected to focus on establishing a strategic framework for trade diversification, energy transformation, and security. Anand will also travel to Mumbai to meet Canadian and Indian businesses to support investment, job creation, and economic opportunities in both countries.
&ldquo;For Canada to be strong at home, we need strong, stable partnerships abroad. I am building bridges and increasing cooperation with India, Singapore and China. In line with Canada&rsquo;s Indo-Pacific Strategy, I will be working to advance efforts to position Canada as a trusted, reliable partner of choice for Indo-Pacific countries and their economies,&rdquo; Anand said ahead of the tour.
The visit comes almost four months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 summit in June, with both sides recently restoring their High Commissioners following last year&rsquo;s diplomatic strain.
