Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday emphasized that blaming an entire nation for the actions of one individual is unjust. His remarks followed the Mumbai Police&rsquo;s confirmation that Mohammad Shariful, a suspect in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, had entered India illegally from Bangladesh.
&ldquo;If the person who attacked Saif Ali Khan is a Bangladeshi, then we can&rsquo;t blame an entire nation,&rdquo; Abdullah stated during an interview. Drawing a parallel, he noted, &ldquo;If an Indian does something wrong in the US or Canada, can we blame India for it? There are illegal Indians in the US as well. Trump has given numbers. Anyone can resort to anything to earn a livelihood.&rdquo;
The stabbing incident has brought the issue of illegal Bangladeshi migrants to the forefront, particularly in Mumbai, where the accused was found using a West Bengal resident&rsquo;s Aadhaar card to obtain a SIM before moving to the city. Arrested in Thane, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir (30) has been remanded to police custody.
This incident has reignited debates about the presence of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in India. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently highlighted concerns at a BJP function, citing nearly 100 cases of illegal immigration reported in Amravati and Malegaon in Nashik districts. Fadnavis alleged that some infiltrators were obtaining fake documents like birth certificates, Aadhaar cards, and voter IDs as part of what he termed &ldquo;vote jihad Part 2.&rdquo;
Action and Statistics
The Mumbai Police have intensified their crackdown on illegal migrants, arresting 20 Bangladeshis on January 19 alone. In the first 19 days of January 2025, 138 illegal Bangladeshi migrants were detained, many with forged identification documents. Police statistics reveal that during January to June 2024, 177 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended, and 81 deported. Comparatively, in 2023, 368 were arrested, but only 68 were sent back to Bangladesh.
These figures underscore the challenges of managing illegal immigration. Out of 692 Bangladeshi nationals arrested in recent months, only 169 have been successfully deported. The logistical and diplomatic hurdles highlight the complexities of addressing this issue.
A Balanced Approach
While the crackdown on illegal immigration continues, Abdullah&rsquo;s remarks underline the importance of avoiding generalizations. Isolating an entire nation for the actions of a few risks fostering xenophobia and undermines India&rsquo;s diverse and inclusive ethos. &ldquo;There are illegal immigrants from various countries, including Indians abroad,&rdquo; Abdullah pointed out, urging a fair and measured response.
The need of the hour is a balanced approach&mdash;one that addresses the illegal migration problem without stigmatizing a community or nation. Enhanced border security, stricter verification processes for identity documents, and effective deportation mechanisms can help mitigate this issue while respecting the dignity and rights of individuals.
