A day after Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide in Chandigarh, new revelations have deepened the mystery surrounding his death. A Rohtak-based liquor trader has alleged that a head constable, Sushil Kumar, demanded a monthly bribe of ₹2.5 lakh in the senior officer&rsquo;s name.
According to police officials, the businessman claimed he was told to &ldquo;pay monthly to stay safe and keep his liquor business running.&rdquo; The demand, he alleged, came from someone claiming to represent &ldquo;IG Sahib&rdquo;, referring to the late officer, who was then serving as&nbsp;Inspector General of Police, Rohtak Range.
The trader, identified as Bansal, said he recorded his conversation with the constable and lodged a complaint three days before Kumar&rsquo;s death. &ldquo;In June, Sushil Kumar pressured me that I will have to pay the monthly to IG Sahib if I need to stay safe. He threatened that if I failed, false cases would be filed against me,&rdquo; Bansal told police.
Bansal claimed he called the constable to his office on July 9, 2025, where the bribe demand was reiterated. &ldquo;He said IG Y Puran would fully support me. I have audio recordings and CCTV footage. Action should be taken,&rdquo; Bansal said in his statement.
Police later arrested Head Constable Sushil Kumar, who allegedly confessed to demanding money in the officer&rsquo;s name. &ldquo;He confessed to demanding a bribe in Y Puran Kumar&rsquo;s name,&rdquo; said a senior official, adding that Kumar had not been summoned for questioning before his death.
Meanwhile, a suicide note allegedly left by Y Puran Kumar accused several senior officers of &ldquo;mental torture.&rdquo; Sources claim the note was sent to a few officers close to him before his death. &ldquo;The investigation is going on,&rdquo; said Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur.
The postmortem will be conducted after his wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, returns from Japan, where she was part of an official delegation.
The Haryana Police have launched a parallel probe into the bribery allegations and the events leading to the officer&rsquo;s tragic death.
