The suspected suicides of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sandeep Lathar have rocked the state, sparking allegations of caste discrimination, corruption, and political maneuvering. Puran Kumar, 52, a 2001-batch officer serving as inspector general at Rohtak&rsquo;s Police Training Centre, was found dead on October 7 at his Chandigarh residence. In his suicide note, he accused eight senior officers, including DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, of harassment and caste-based discrimination, prompting the state to send Kapur on leave and appoint Om Parkash Singh as acting DGP.
Puran Kumar&rsquo;s wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, initially refused autopsy consent, demanding action against those named in the note, but later agreed after police assurances. The cremation took place on October 15 in Chandigarh, performed by the couple&rsquo;s daughters. Just a week later, ASI Sandeep Lathar, 41, was found dead in Rohtak, leaving behind a suicide note and video accusing Puran Kumar and his family of corruption, claiming Kumar ended his life to avoid family humiliation.
An FIR has now been registered against Amneet P Kumar, her brother MLA Amit Rattan, and several police officials under sections of abetment and criminal conspiracy. Lathar&rsquo;s note and video allege threats and bribery involving Puran Kumar&rsquo;s associates, including the arrest of ex-ASI Sushil Kumar, intensifying public and political scrutiny. Authorities assured Lathar&rsquo;s family of a government job for his spouse, a state-honoured funeral, and a time-bound probe into the case.
Opposition leaders, including Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Abhay Singh Chautala, have demanded judicial supervision for both investigations, with calls for a CBI probe to ensure fairness. Meanwhile, Chandigarh Police&rsquo;s SIT continues to probe Puran Kumar&rsquo;s death, and Rohtak police investigates Lathar&rsquo;s case, with forensic examination of devices used to type the suicide note still pending.
