The encounter began on Wednesday evening during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the Chatroo area, launched after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of militants.</span></p>
<p data-start="365" data-end="551"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">As the forces approached, the terrorists opened fire, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. Intermittent firing between the two sides continued through the night and into Thursday.</span></p>
<p data-start="553" data-end="820"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The Army&rsquo;s WhiteKnight Corps, headquartered in Nagrota, posted on X (formerly Twitter), &ldquo;Based on specific intelligence, a joint search operation was underway in Kanzal Mandu, Kishtwar. Contact has been established with the terrorists and operations are in progress.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p data-start="822" data-end="970"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">This encounter comes just days after a similar gunfight on June 26 in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district, where one terrorist was neutralized.</span></p>
<p data-start="972" data-end="1143"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The latest operation also coincides with the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra, as the first batch of pilgrims arrived at the Pahalgam and Baltal base camps on Wednesday.</span></p>
<p data-start="1145" data-end="1385"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Security has been tightened across the region following the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam&rsquo;s Baisaran meadow, where Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them by faith. The brutal attack sparked nationwide outrage.</span></p>
<p data-start="1387" data-end="1687"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorized the armed forces to carry out targeted strikes. The Indian military responded by hitting nine terror infrastructure sites deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including Muridke near Lahore, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad.</span></p>
<p data-start="1689" data-end="2016" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Following these operations, Pakistani forces retaliated by shelling civilian areas in several J&amp;K districts, including Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara. The shelling killed 18 civilians, 13 of them in Poonch.
