Four people lost their lives and one sustained critical injuries in a head-on collision between two SUVs on the Bhopal-Vidisha highway near Bairasia, about 60 km from the Madhya Pradesh capital, on Sunday night.
Authorities described a chaotic scene, with the vehicles mangled and debris scattered across the road. The deceased, all passengers of one SUV, were returning home to Sheopur after attending a discourse by Maulana Mahmood Madani in Bhopal. They have been identified as Anees Sahab, Khalid Bhai, Sajid Bhai, and Naved Bhai.
The lone survivor, Rafaqat Gauri, is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Bairasia Hospital. Doctors reported his condition as critical but stable.
Preliminary reports suggest that high speed and reduced visibility due to patchy fog may have contributed to the crash. Police are also investigating possible mechanical failure or driver error. Both SUVs have been seized for forensic examination, and a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered.
&ldquo;The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the collision occurred on Barasia-Nazirabad road. We are investigating the exact cause,&rdquo; Bairasia police officials said.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Bhopal District Hospital for post-mortem. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially on rural highways at night. This marks the third fatal accident in Bhopal division this month, prompting renewed calls from road safety activists for stricter speed enforcement and improved road lighting.
