In a major border security operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended former Bangladeshi police officer Md Arifuzzaman, who attempted to enter India illegally, and he has now been remanded to 14-day jail custody.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at the Hakimpur check post on the India-Bangladesh border in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Taking advantage of heavy monsoon rains, Arifuzzaman, a former Assistant Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, tried to slip into India undetected.
&ldquo;As soon as he crossed the border, he was immediately detained by the 143rd Battalion of BSF and handed over to Swarupnagar police,&rdquo; sources said. Several official documents were recovered from him and have been submitted to senior Indian government authorities.
Arifuzzaman had been in hiding in Satkhira district, Bangladesh, following the change in government, fearing prosecution under the current administration led by Sheikh Hasina. He was recently suspended from his post in the Armed Police Battalion-2, Muktagacha, Mymensingh, for being absent from duty since October 14, 2024, without official approval.
Officials said that diplomatic communication has already taken place between the High Commissioners of India and Bangladesh regarding the case.
