A devastating fire at Jaipur&rsquo;s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital claimed eight lives late Sunday night. The incident occurred around 11:20 pm in the neuro ICU ward&rsquo;s store room, where medical equipment, papers, and blood sample tubes were stored. Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
At the time of the fire, 11 patients were admitted to the affected ICU, while 13 others were in an adjoining ward. The entire area quickly filled with thick smoke, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. Firefighters broke windowpanes from the opposite side of the building to gain access and sprayed water jets to control the flames.
It took nearly 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. Patients were evacuated from their beds and shifted to safety outside the hospital building.
The victims have been identified as Pintu (Sikar), Dileep (Aandhi, Jaipur), Shrinath (Bharatpur), Rukmani (Bharatpur), Kushma (Bharatpur), Sarvesh (Agra, UP), Bahadur (Sanganer, Jaipur), and Digambar Verma.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause and to ensure stricter safety measures in the future.
