The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa in its money laundering probe linked to illegal online betting platforms. Uthappa has been asked to appear on September 22, followed by Yuvraj on September 23 at the ED headquarters in New Delhi.
Earlier, Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan were questioned on August 13 and September 4, respectively, as part of the same investigation. The probe also involves celebrities from the entertainment sector, including ex-MP Mimi Chakraborty, actor Ankush Hazra, and Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela, who was expected to record her statement.
According to officials, the ED is investigating multiple betting apps that operate under surrogate advertisements despite being banned. These platforms allegedly route funds abroad, violating money laundering laws, FEMA, and tax regulations.
The agency has already questioned representatives of Google and Meta to trace advertisement flows, as these platforms allegedly hosted promotional content for betting sites. Despite multiple advisories from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 2023 prohibiting advertisements for betting apps, several celebrities reportedly endorsed them.
Investigators estimate that over 220 million Indians use betting apps, with nearly half being regular users. The ED is now examining financial transactions, promotional deals, and endorsements linked to the platforms to uncover possible violations.
