The University of Delhi has suspended Professor Rasal Singh, Principal of Ramanujan College, following a faculty member&rsquo;s complaint of harassment and hostile conduct. Officials confirmed on Monday that the suspension order was issued last week after the complaint, first filed on March 13, was reviewed by the college governing body and a fact-finding committee. Singh will remain suspended pending further inquiry.
In his defence, Singh has written to the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office, calling the allegations &ldquo;false and retaliatory.&rdquo; He argued that the complaint was linked to a promotion dispute. &ldquo;The timing clearly indicates the retaliatory and afterthought nature of the complaint,&rdquo; he wrote in his grievance filed on September 13.
Singh has also flagged procedural lapses, noting that the case was not referred to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) as mandated under UGC and PoSH regulations. &ldquo;Despite the lapse of over six months since the complaint was filed, it has not yet been referred to the ICC. Instead, I am facing undue political pressure to resign under threat of termination or suspension,&rdquo; he alleged.
Highlighting his career record, Singh, who earlier served as Dean of Students&rsquo; Welfare and Dean of Languages at the Central University of Jammu, said the charge has caused&nbsp;&ldquo;severe professional damage and personal distress.&rdquo; He cited his contribution in raising Ramanujan College&rsquo;s standing in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) from 65 to 37 during his tenure.
&ldquo;This unfounded allegation has tarnished my hard-earned reputation as a first-generation academic from a rural background,&rdquo; he wrote in his submission.
The university has not issued further details on the next steps in the inquiry.
