A major controversy has erupted at University of Delhi after a professor accused a student leader and members of a student group of physically assaulting him inside the principal&rsquo;s office in the presence of police personnel.
On Friday, Sujeet Kumar, a commerce professor at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College and convenor of the disciplinary committee, alleged that he was slapped by Deepika Jha, the joint secretary of Delhi University Students&rsquo; Union (DUSU), and attacked by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The incident reportedly took place on Thursday during a meeting called to address a clash between student groups.
Kumar claimed that during a fresher&rsquo;s function earlier this week, a fight broke out among students, following which the matter reached the disciplinary committee. &ldquo;While trying to control the situation, I was surrounded by students. Police intervened and escorted me out. Later, inside the principal&rsquo;s office, I was pressured to resign. It was then that Deepika came and slapped me. The CCTV footage has captured this,&rdquo; he alleged.
A 32-second video of the incident, reportedly from a CCTV camera, shows Jha and several others inside the room along with at least four police personnel. The clip appears to show her standing up and slapping Kumar. A female constable is then seen pulling her back while an unidentified man pushes Kumar back into his seat.
Police confirmed receiving a complaint from Kumar and said the CCTV footage is being reviewed. &ldquo;The matter is under inquiry,&rdquo; a senior officer said.
The clash reportedly stemmed from the oath-taking ceremony of the college&rsquo;s student council on Wednesday. A student from National Students&rsquo; Union of India (NSUI) had won the president&rsquo;s post, while ABVP members secured the other positions. According to Kumar, tensions flared when a suspended ABVP student allegedly assaulted the NSUI president during the event.
Deepika Jha, meanwhile, admitted to slapping the professor but accused him of inappropriate behavior. She claimed that Kumar verbally abused her and made her uncomfortable during the discussion. &ldquo;I confronted him because I saw him smoking in public, which is not appropriate for students to see. He then abused me and smirked at me, so I slapped him. I shouldn&rsquo;t have done that, but I was provoked,&rdquo; she said.
Kumar strongly denied the allegations, asserting that ABVP members entered the meeting uninvited and threatened him. He also referred to an earlier incident in which ABVP members had allegedly attacked the NSUI student, leading to the suspension of three students.
The Delhi University Teachers&rsquo; Association (DUTA) has written to the university&rsquo;s vice chancellor demanding immediate action and protection for faculty members. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
