Delhi commuters will now have to shell out more for their daily metro rides, as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has revised its ticket fares effective Monday, August 25. This is the first increase since 2017, marking an eight-year gap between fare hikes.
According to DMRC, the rise has been kept minimal, ranging from ₹1 to ₹4 across most routes, while the Airport Express Line will see a jump of up to ₹5. &ldquo;The passenger fares of the Delhi Metro services have been revised with effect from today. The increase is minimal, ranging from ₹1 to ₹4 only depending on the distance of travel, and up to ₹5 for the Airport Express Line,&rdquo; the corporation confirmed in a post on X.
The new fare structure covers all distance slabs. Short-distance travellers (0&ndash;2 km) will now pay ₹11 instead of ₹10, while those covering over 32 km will pay ₹64, up from the previous maximum of ₹60.
To soften the impact, DMRC has announced special discounted fares on Sundays and national holidays. On these days, passengers can travel up to 5 km for just ₹11, while the maximum fare is capped at ₹54 for long-distance journeys.
The fare revision affects the entire Delhi Metro network, which stretches over 390 km and connects more than 285 stations across Delhi and the NCR.
The decision, however, has triggered debate among commuters. Many expressed frustration over the rising cost of living, questioning the timing of the increase. Despite criticism, DMRC officials argue that the revision is essential to maintain service quality, operational sustainability, and to fund upcoming infrastructure expansions.
