Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public grievance hearing at her Civil Lines residence, sparking outrage and political uproar.
The incident occurred at the weekly Jan Sunwai programme, where citizens present grievances directly before the Chief Minister. The man in his mid-30s to early 40's approached Gupta, handed over some papers, and suddenly slapped her, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses. Reports also suggest that he engaged in a physical scuffle with the CM. He was immediately taken into custody. Initial questioning has identified the accused as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a resident of Rajkot. Sources indicate that one of his relatives is currently lodged in jail, and he had submitted a petition for their release, which remains pending in court. His family has also shed light on his background.
Rajkot Police have questioned the accused&rsquo;s mother, who stated she was unaware of her son&rsquo;s visit to the Delhi Chief Minister&rsquo;s residence.
She disclosed that he had travelled to Delhi following a court verdict concerning stray dogs and described him as mentally unstable, while also noting his deep affection for animals. She added that he had previously undertaken trips to Delhi on his own.
The accused, Rajesh Sakariya, comes from a family of rickshaw pullers. Police confirmed that he remains in custody and will undergo extensive interrogation to uncover his motives. Meanwhile, Delhi Police have reached out to Gujarat Police to verify the details of his identity and residence.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the Chief Minister may have sustained a head injury in the assault. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the incident, calling it a &ldquo;shameful attack on a constitutional post.&rdquo;
