A devastating fire broke out on a moving AC sleeper bus on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway on Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 PM, claiming the lives of several passengers and leaving many critically injured. The fire engulfed the bus within minutes, forcing passengers to jump from the moving vehicle to save their lives.
Reports indicate that 16 passengers, including 3 children and 4 women, suffered severe burns and were immediately admitted to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer, from where the critically injured were referred to hospitals in Jodhpur. Most of the victims sustained burns over 70% of their bodies.
According to Krishanpal Singh Rathore, Assistant Fire Officer of the Jaisalmer Municipal Council, 10&ndash;12 people are feared dead in the tragedy. Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit may have sparked the fire. The bus was carrying a total of 57 passengers and caught fire near Thaiyat village, around 20 kilometers from Jaisalmer. Flames and smoke were reportedly rising to significant heights, drawing the attention of nearby villagers and travelers who rushed to help and initiate relief efforts. The fire department and police were promptly informed.
The bus had departed from Jaisalmer around 3 PM for its daily trip to Jodhpur. Smoke reportedly began emanating from the rear of the bus near Thaiyat village, quickly spreading to engulf the entire vehicle. Emergency response teams, along with local residents, assisted in rescuing passengers and providing immediate aid.
The incident drew condolences from political leaders, with former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressing his sorrow on social media and wishing speedy recovery for the injured. Current Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also extended his sympathies and assured full support for the treatment of the victims.
Police and local authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire. The tragedy has left the local community in shock and grief, highlighting the need for strict safety measures on public transport.
