Cyclone Shakhti has intensified over the Arabian Sea and is likely to turn toward Gujarat after initially moving toward Oman, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Sunday.
Classified as a severe cyclonic storm, Shakhti is currently moving west-southwest at 15&ndash;17 km/h. It is expected to maintain this direction until Monday before weakening slightly and turning east-northeast over the central Arabian Sea.
Authorities have warned fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and asked coastal residents to stay alert. The IMD has issued LCS-3 and DW2 signals for Gujarat&rsquo;s northern and southern coasts, highlighting potential rough sea conditions.
Strong winds of 45&ndash;55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h, are expected along the coast. By October 7, the cyclone may weaken into a depression with wind speeds dropping to 50&ndash;60 km/h.
Rainfall is predicted across Saurashtra and South Gujarat between October 7&ndash;9, particularly in Jamnagar, Dwarka, Porbandar, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad. Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar may also receive light to moderate showers, though the cyclone does not currently threaten Maharashtra&rsquo;s coastline.
Experts say the storm is expected to weaken before landfall, but authorities continue monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents to follow official advisories to ensure safety.
