Cyclonic storm Montha crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday evening, bringing widespread rainfall across multiple states and triggering weather alerts nationwide. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the landfall process began around 7 pm near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90 to 100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
The cyclone's impact has not been limited to Andhra Pradesh, as heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. IMD has predicted light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal from October 29 to 31, with chances of isolated heavy rainfall. Similar weather conditions are expected in Bihar and Jharkhand on October 30 and 31, and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from October 30 to November 1.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Naidu, in an official press release, stated, "If we work in the same way for another two days, we can give much relief to people. Due to the cyclone, two persons died."
Gujarat Braces for Heavy Downpour
The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across Gujarat in the coming days. An Orange Alert has been issued for Thursday, October 30, for Porbandar, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Diu, anticipating very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
A Yellow Alert has been declared for Dwarka, Rajkot, Botad, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Panchmahal, Dahod, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Dang, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, with predictions of heavy rain at scattered locations.
Friday, October 31, an Orange Alert has been issued for Dwarka, Porbandar, and Junagadh, expecting very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Saurashtra and South Gujarat. Yellow Alert continues for Jamnagar, Rajkot, Amreli, Gir-Somnath, Diu, Bhavnagar, Anand, Vadodara, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Tapi, Dang, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli with heavy rainfall warnings.
Dr. A.K. Das, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next five days, and LCS Signal Number 3 has been hoisted at ports. The rainfall forecast is attributed to a depression in the Arabian Sea. Light rain is also expected in Ahmedabad.
