Cyclonic Storm Ditwah has begun advancing toward the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is currently positioned around 480 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 580 km south-southeast of Chennai, after moving northwest over coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.
IMD&rsquo;s latest update indicates that the cyclone is expected to continue its north-northwest movement, crossing the Sri Lankan coast and entering the southwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to approach the North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh regions by the morning of November 30. Strong winds, intense rainfall and rough sea conditions are forecast across coastal areas over the next few days.
<h3 dir="ltr">Red and Orange Alerts Issued in Tamil Nadu</h3>
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has confirmed that Cyclone Ditwah is not expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. However, significant weather impacts are anticipated.
A red alert indicating extremely heavy rainfall above 20 cm has been issued for the Cauvery Delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai until November 30. An orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Chengalpattu, predicting rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm.
Wind speeds near the cyclone&rsquo;s centre may reach 60&ndash;80 kmph, with gusts up to 90 kmph, while surrounding regions could experience winds of 35&ndash;55 kmph. Similar gusty winds are expected over parts of the Arabian Sea near Kerala, Lakshadweep and the Maldives.
<h3 dir="ltr">Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore</h3>
IMD has strongly advised fishermen to avoid the south, central, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal for the next five days due to dangerous sea conditions.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has reviewed disaster management preparedness with state officials as the system approaches.
<h3 dir="ltr">Heavy Rainfall Expected in Andhra Pradesh</h3>
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has warned of widespread heavy rains in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from November 29 onwards. Districts including Chittoor, Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya and Sri Sathya Sai are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall for two days starting Saturday.
