A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is set to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange and red alerts for several districts. The system, which has intensified into a depression, is expected to make landfall along the south Odisha and north Andhra coastline by the morning of October 27.
The IMD has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rain in parts of Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and adjoining Telangana. Wind speeds are likely to reach 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts even stronger in exposed areas. Sea conditions are expected to turn rough, and fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal until the system passes.
In Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed district collectors in 17 districts to remain on high alert and ensure preparations for possible flooding in low-lying regions. The administration is deploying disaster response teams, stocking relief materials, and setting up shelters in vulnerable areas.
In Andhra Pradesh, the state government has issued similar instructions, asking coastal districts to prepare for heavy rains, flash floods, and disruptions in power and communication lines. Naval and NDRF teams are being kept on standby for rescue and relief operations.
The depression had formed after a low-pressure area over the Bay intensified, and meteorologists warn it could strengthen further before landfall. Heavy rain bands are already lashing parts of south Odisha and north Andhra, raising fears of swollen rivers and waterlogging in towns and villages.
With the IMD forecasting widespread rainfall through October 27, authorities in both states have urged people to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly follow safety advisories.
The Bay of Bengal has been highly active this season, and this latest system highlights the recurring cyclone risk faced by India&rsquo;s east coast.
