Cuttack, known for its peace and communal harmony, is on edge once again. For the first time in three decades, a citywide curfew was imposed after clashes broke out between two communities during a Durga idol immersion in a sensitive area last weekend.
What began as a local dispute over loud music spiraled into violence after VHP activists defied restrictions, clashing with police and pelting stones. Officers were forced to use lathicharge and tear gas to disperse the mob.
The situation has left Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also handles the Home portfolio, facing uncomfortable questions. The involvement of the VHP, part of the Sangh Parivar network&nbsp;has handed the Opposition fresh ammunition.
&ldquo;This is an alarm bell,&rdquo; admitted a senior BJP leader, urging the government to act decisively to curb right-wing violence.
BJD MP Sulata Deo said, &ldquo;Cuttack has never witnessed animosity during festivals. The violence shows the government has failed as no action is being taken against criminals.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, VHP leader Sujit Kumar Nayak maintained, &ldquo;We have full faith in the government. The CM has assured strict action against those who pelted stones. Several of our workers were also injured.&rdquo;
Officials confirmed multiple arrests and said the CM has directed top police officers to camp in Cuttack until peace is restored. The administration has opened dialogue with community leaders to rebuild confidence.
This isn&rsquo;t an isolated flashpoint similar incidents have occurred in Balasore, Bhadrak, and Ganjam since the BJP came to power in Odisha last year. Analysts say the latest violence is a test of Majhi&rsquo;s control over law and order and his ability to rein in hardline elements within his own camp.
