Cuttack city in Odisha has been placed under curfew and partial internet suspension following renewed violence on Sunday, days after a group clash erupted during a Durga idol immersion procession. At least 25 people were injured in the fresh wave of unrest.
According to the police, curfew orders will remain in effect for 36 hours from 10 pm on Sunday, while internet and social media services are suspended for 24 hours across major parts of the city.
The latest clashes followed Friday night&rsquo;s violence between two communities during the idol immersion of the Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee near Haathi Pokhari in the Dargah Bazaar area. The altercation reportedly began when locals objected to loud music during the procession. Stones and bottles were hurled, injuring several people, including Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.
Multiple vehicles and stalls were vandalised, and police had to resort to a lathi charge to restore order. Following Friday&rsquo;s violence, immersion activities were temporarily halted until Saturday morning.
Fresh clashes broke out again on Sunday between police and protesters at Dargah Bazaar, leading to additional injuries and property damage.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed in 13 police station areas, including Mangalabag, Purighat, and Badambadi. The internet shutdown covers the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, CDA, and 42 Mauza areas to prevent the spread of inflammatory content online.
Police have arrested six suspects and are reviewing CCTV and drone footage to identify others involved. Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday.
