The legal troubles of Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra deepened on Thursday after a Delhi court refused to grant them anticipatory bail. The brothers, who co-owned the Goa nightclub where at least 25 people died in a devastating fire on December 6, are currently detained in Thailand and face imminent deportation to India.
Authorities in Goa and central agencies are coordinating efforts to bring the duo back to face investigation. The state government has also requested the revocation of their passports, after it emerged that the brothers left India just hours after the fire broke out at their Arpora nightclub, Birch by Romeo Lane.
Investigators say the Luthras booked flight tickets to Phuket around 1:17 AM on December 7, barely an hour after learning of the incident, even as emergency crews were still trying to control the blaze. According to police, the brothers misled officials about their departure time and have since shown no willingness to cooperate.
In court, the Goa Police argued that the brothers&rsquo; conduct disqualified them from receiving any special protection. They said the duo had &ldquo;no reason&rdquo; to be in Thailand and emphasised that the brothers misrepresented facts before the authorities.
The Luthras are facing charges that include causing death by negligence and manslaughter. Investigators allege that the nightclub hosted a fire show without adequate safety arrangements, including essential firefighting equipment and emergency provisions.
The brothers&rsquo; lawyers countered that they were not fleeing India but were on a work trip. They also claimed the pair were not the actual owners of the club and that day-to-day operations were handled by the staff.
So far, five managers and staff members have been arrested in connection with the tragedy, while efforts to bring the Luthra brothers back to India continue.
