A 13-year-old Class 8 student from Phiringimala village in Odisha&rsquo;s Bargarh district died on Monday after allegedly setting herself on fire.
The incident took place in Gaisilet police limits when locals discovered the girl severely burnt in a field near her uncle&rsquo;s house. She was rushed to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, Sambalpur, but succumbed to her injuries later in the afternoon, confirmed Abilash G., In-charge Superintendent of Police, Bargarh.
According to police, the girl&rsquo;s family reported that she had taken the extreme step herself. A video statement recorded after the incident, in which the victim cited a disagreement with a female friend, has been seized for investigation.
The Class 8 Ashram School student had been staying at her uncle&rsquo;s home for a few days due to health issues. Her father, a migrant labourer, works in Tamil Nadu.
Authorities have registered an unnatural death case and are investigating the cause. Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Himansu Kumar Lal assured strict legal action.
This case marks the fourth self-immolation incident involving young girls in Odisha in the past month, raising serious concerns about mental health, safety, and social pressures.
