A devastating accident occurred late Thursday night near L&amp;T&rsquo;s headquarters in Manapakkam, Chennai, when a section of an under-construction metro track collapsed. The incident claimed the life of a 43-year-old motorcyclist, Ramesh, from Nagercoil.
According to preliminary reports, structural issues at the construction site led to the failure of two massive girders. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) confirmed the fatality and stated that an investigation will be carried out to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
Emergency crews worked through the night to recover Ramesh&rsquo;s body from beneath the heavy debris. His remains were sent to the Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
In an official statement posted on X, CMRL expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. &ldquo;Following the unfortunate collapse of two I-girders at Manapakkam resulting in the death of Mr. Ramesh (43), CMRL has offered an immediate relief of ₹5 lakh to the family. Contractor L&amp;T has also provided ₹20 lakh in compensation. A high-level inquiry committee has been formed to probe the incident.&rdquo;
The accident occurred around 9:45 PM while Ramesh was passing through the construction zone on Poonamallee&ndash;St. Thomas Mount Road, where work has been ongoing for a multi-level metro corridor.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as terrifying &mdash; the heavy concrete girders, weighing between 50 and 100 tonnes, suddenly gave way and crashed onto the busy roadway, causing panic and bringing traffic to a halt for several hours.
