&nbsp;A 55-year-old man was mauled to death by a Pitbull in Jafferkhanpet, Chennai, in yet another shocking case of a pet dog attack. The victim, Karunakaran, was fatally injured on a narrow residential street when his neighbour&rsquo;s unleashed Pitbull lunged at him.
According to police, the dog&rsquo;s owner, identified as Poongodi, was also bitten while attempting to restrain the animal. She is undergoing treatment and will be arrested for negligence once discharged.
&ldquo;The dog mauled the neighbour, none could overpower it, and the man died on the spot,&rdquo; a senior officer said, adding that police are probing whether the owner had a valid licence for the Pitbull.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as &ldquo;brutal,&rdquo; noting that the dog bit the victim&rsquo;s genital area. Residents said they had repeatedly urged the owner to relocate the dog from the congested neighbourhood, but their appeals went ignored.
Veterinary officials have captured the Pitbull, which has been sent for observation. While no prior formal complaints were filed against the owner, neighbours had raised concerns with the Chennai Corporation.
The tragedy comes amid a spate of pet dog attacks in Chennai. Last year, a young girl was mauled by Rottweilers in a park, while earlier this month, an auto driver was injured by two Rottweilers being walked by a minor. Authorities are now considering stricter regulations, including mandatory muzzling of aggressive breeds in public.
The incident also coincides with the Supreme Court&rsquo;s interim directive to Delhi authorities on stray dog management, highlighting broader concerns over animal control and public safety.
