Tension gripped Assam&rsquo;s Baksa district on Wednesday as violent protests broke out outside the district jail when five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were brought to the facility. The convoy carrying the accused came under attack from hundreds of angry fans demanding justice for the late singer. In the ensuing chaos, three police vehicles were set ablaze, and several police personnel, along with a journalist, sustained injuries in the stone pelting.
The situation escalated rapidly, forcing security forces to fire in the air, use tear gas shells, and resort to baton charges to disperse the mob. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and anger as protesters surrounded the police vehicles, chanting slogans and hurling stones. The crowd demanded harsh punishment for those accused in the case, even as police reinforcements were rushed to the area to restore order.
Those remanded to judicial custody include two prime accused, North East India Festival organiser&nbsp;Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen&rsquo;s manager Siddhartha Sharma, &nbsp;both arrested on October 1. Also sent to custody were Sandipan Garg, Zubeen&rsquo;s cousin and a suspended Assam Police officer, and two of his personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, who were arrested on October 10.
All five had been under police custody since their arrest, during which they were interrogated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of the beloved Assamese icon. As their custody ended on Wednesday, they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Baksa and remanded to judicial custody,&nbsp; a move that triggered the violent outburst among Zubeen&rsquo;s grieving supporters.
