The central government has withdrawn its directive requiring all smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on new devices. The rollback comes after strong public criticism from privacy advocates, cybersecurity professionals and opposition leaders who raised concerns about data protection and user rights.
Sanchar Saathi, introduced in May 2023, enables users to verify mobile numbers linked to their identity, report fraudulent activity and trace lost or stolen phones. The mobile app version was released to further support the government's push to curb rising cybercrime across the country.
The directive, issued in late November, required phone makers to install the Sanchar Saathi app in a way that prevented users from disabling or uninstalling it. This triggered widespread backlash, with many calling it a violation of citizens&rsquo; fundamental right to privacy.
Additionally, some major smartphone manufacturers reportedly indicated they would not comply with compulsory pre-installation, leading to further pressure on policymakers.
Following public outrage, government officials defended the app, stating that Sanchar Saathi does not access personal data and is designed solely for user safety and fraud protection. They reiterated that the app cannot be used for surveillance or unauthorised monitoring.
The mandate has now been officially withdrawn, and the app remains optional for users who wish to access its features for digital security.
