The Centre has extended President&rsquo;s Rule in Manipur for another six months, effective from August 13, 2025. The decision follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah&rsquo;s resolution in the Lok Sabha, which was passed with approval. The rule was first imposed on February 13, 2025, following administrative collapse and prolonged ethnic violence.
Manipur has remained tense since May 2023, when clashes between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities broke out after a Tribal Solidarity March. Over 250 people have died, and more than 60,000 have been displaced.
The breakdown in governance worsened after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, just ahead of a no-confidence vote. With no consensus on his successor, the BJP-led state government collapsed.
Despite calls from 21 NDA MLAs to restore a popular government, citing public frustration and civil society opposition, the Centre has opted to continue President&rsquo;s Rule to stabilise law and order.
In recent developments, security forces arrested 10 insurgents linked to banned outfits, including KCP, PREPAK, and PLA, across six districts.
Supply routes via National Highways 2 and 37 remain disrupted, exacerbating the crisis in the valley. The government continues efforts to restore peace and assess possibilities for future elections.
