The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken charge of probing the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives during a political rally of actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Velusamypuram, Tamil Nadu, on September 27. Over 60 people were injured in the tragic incident.
Following the Supreme Court orders, the CBI re-registered the state police FIR and informed the local court. A senior officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, supported by other CBI officers.
To ensure transparency and oversight, a three-member supervisory committee headed by former apex court judge Ajay Rastogi will monitor the investigation. The Supreme Court emphasised that the stampede has significant implications for citizens&rsquo; lives and fundamental rights, underscoring the need for an impartial and unbiased probe.
The bench criticised prior public comments by top police officers, noting that such statements could cast doubt on the fairness of the investigation. Restoring public faith in the criminal justice process is essential, the court said, stressing that a fair and independent investigation is the right of every citizen.
