The Union Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Wednesday for the first time since the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 people on April 22. The meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will commence at 11 am.
This will be the first full cabinet meeting since the incident, following the absence of a cabinet session last week. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened on April 23 and issued a strong condemnation of the violence.
Following that meeting, the government implemented a series of punitive measures against Pakistan, citing cross-border links to the Pahalgam attack. Among the steps taken were the downgrading of diplomatic ties, expulsion of Pakistani military attach&eacute;s, suspension of the over six-decade-old Indus Waters Treaty, and the immediate closure of the Attari land-transit post.&nbsp;
Additionally, the government suspended the issuance of SAARC visas and shut down the Wagah-Attari border crossing.
Security continues to be a primary focus, with another meeting of the CCS scheduled to take place around 11 am on Wednesday, marking the second round of high-level discussions since the attack. Officials are expected to review the country&rsquo;s preparedness and security response.
Subsequent to the CCS meeting, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) will convene under Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s leadership. The CCPA includes senior ministers such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Health Minister JP Nadda, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
There will also be a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.&nbsp;
At its previous meeting on April 25, the CCS reviewed the national security posture, placed security forces on high alert, and reiterated the government&rsquo;s commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice.
In further action, the government issued instructions for all Pakistani nationals residing in India to return to their country by Sunday, while extending the deadline until Tuesday for those holding medical visas. In retaliation, Pakistan announced the suspension of all bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement.
