A passenger bus carrying dozens of commuters plunged into a 200-foot-deep gorge in the Kalkhar area of Mandi district on Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring around 20 to 25 others.
The bus was travelling from Baldwara to Mandi when the incident occurred around 9 a.m. According to officials, the accident happened after the driver reportedly lost control of the overloaded vehicle on a rain-slicked road.
Eyewitnesses said one person was crushed under the bus and died on the spot. Locals alerted authorities immediately, and rescue teams, assisted by persistent rainfall, faced significant challenges in pulling survivors from the wreckage.
Seriously injured passengers were referred to Nerchowk Medical College, while others received treatment at Rewalsar&rsquo;s Community Health Centre. A crane was deployed to retrieve the bus and rescue the driver, who was trapped inside.
Preliminary findings suggest the poor condition of the bus and overloading contributed to the accident. Officials confirmed the vehicle was carrying more passengers than permitted, a common issue in hilly terrains with limited transport options.
The district administration has launched an investigation into the crash to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents.
