The Border Security Force (BSF) in Rajasthan has detained a 30-year-old man from West Bengal, Lalchand Sheikh, who was allegedly trying to cross into Pakistan near Jaisalmer. Officials said Sheikh was spotted in the Pochina area, roughly 15 km from the international border, and failed to give a convincing reason for being there.
Sheikh claimed he intended to reach Saudi Arabia via Pakistan, as his brother works there. However, given the recent spike in espionage and infiltration cases in Jaisalmer, authorities are treating his explanation with caution. He has been handed over to the Joint Investigation Committee (JIC) for a thorough probe into his background, contacts, and potential links to anti-national elements.
Jaisalmer has witnessed multiple espionage incidents this year, including arrests of individuals passing sensitive information to Pakistani handlers. Officials stressed that while Sheikh cited personal reasons, all angles, including cross-border espionage are being investigated.
The arrest underscores the ongoing vulnerabilities along the Rajasthan-Pakistan border, despite enhanced operations like 'Operation Sindoor', and highlights the constant vigilance required to prevent illegal crossings and spying.
