Senior CPM leader Brinda Karat has written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking urgent intervention to halt the Uttar Pradesh government&rsquo;s move to withdraw the criminal case related to the 2015 lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq in Dadri. Karat has asked the President to direct Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel to revoke her consent, calling the decision legally untenable and deeply unjust at a stage when the trial is actively underway.
In her letter, Karat alleged that the governor&rsquo;s approval has enabled the state government to undermine the judicial process. With this consent, the state has filed an affidavit in a Greater Noida district court seeking withdrawal of prosecution. The CPM leader underlined that key testimonies have already been recorded. Akhlaq&rsquo;s daughter, a direct witness, deposed in court in 2022, identifying and naming the accused. Two other direct witnesses are yet to testify.&nbsp;
Mohammad Akhlaq, 52, was lynched on September 28, 2015, after being dragged out of his home in Bisada village over allegations of storing beef. His son Danish was brutally assaulted and continues to suffer the physical impact of the attack. Though all 19 accused have been granted bail, Karat stressed that the legal process must be allowed to reach its conclusion, warning that executive interference would set a dangerous precedent.
