Sajid Akram, the man involved in the deadly mass shooting at Australia&rsquo;s iconic Bondi Beach, was originally from Hyderabad, Telangana police confirmed on Tuesday. The attack, carried out during celebrations of the Jewish festival Hanukkah, left at least 16 people dead, including the main accused.
According to Telangana police, the 50-year-old had migrated to Australia nearly 27 years ago and maintained minimal contact with his family in Hyderabad over the years. Authorities clarified that Akram had been living abroad for decades and was not closely connected with his place of origin in India.
The shooting occurred on Sunday when Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed, opened fire at a gathering on Bondi Beach, killing 15 people on the spot. The death toll later rose to 16 after Sajid Akram was shot dead during an altercation with Australian police following the attack.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a targeted assault against Jewish Australians and termed it an act of terrorism driven by antisemitism. The attack has been labelled one of the deadliest terror-related shootings in the country&rsquo;s recent history.
Telangana police further stated that preliminary findings indicate the radicalisation of Sajid Akram and his son had no links to India or any local influence from Telangana. Investigations into the motive and background of the attackers are being led by Australian authorities.
