The victim, 57-year-old Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, succumbed to his injuries, sparking outrage over reckless driving in the capital.
The BMW was behind the wheel of Gaganpreet, who was accompanied by her husband, Parikshit Makkar, and their two children. Police say the couple rushed Singh and his injured wife to a private facility&mdash;Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, nearly 17 km away from the accident site. Investigators have since revealed that the choice of hospital was not incidental. &ldquo;The hospital owner is known to them, as Gaganpreet&rsquo;s parental home is in the same locality,&rdquo; an officer said.
What unfolded next deepened suspicions. Both Gaganpreet and her husband admitted themselves to the same hospital, claiming observation under doctors. Their statements are still pending, but Delhi Police have filed a case under multiple sections, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, acts endangering life, and destruction of evidence.
The BMW, registered in Parikshit&rsquo;s name, is now central to the investigation. Police are probing whether attempts were made to obscure details of the accident. &ldquo;The case is serious not only for rash driving, but an attempt to cover tracks,&rdquo; a senior officer remarked.
Parikshit, who runs a leather saddle and accessories business in West Delhi&rsquo;s Rajouri Garden, remains under watch as police unravel the events that followed the fatal crash. For Singh&rsquo;s grieving family, however, the tragedy is irreversible. His sudden death leaves a void in both his department and his home.
The case raises troubling questions about accountability, privilege, and the ease with which accident trails are diverted. As Singh&rsquo;s wife recovers from her injuries, Delhi Police continue to piece together a chain of decisions that turned a Sunday drive into a fatal chapter.
