A powerful explosion at an oxygen manufacturing plant in Mohali&rsquo;s Industrial Area Phase 9 claimed two lives and left four others seriously injured on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at High Tech Gases Pvt. Ltd., which supplies medical oxygen to PGI Chandigarh and other regional hospitals.
Around 25 employees were present when the blast took place. The deceased have been identified as Asif, a resident of Lucknow, and Davinder. Asif had been working at the unit for over a year.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Damandeep Kaur confirmed the incident, while Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsimran Singh Bal said police received the alert at 9:25 a.m. and rushed to the scene. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with officials not ruling out a possible gas leak.
The blast's impact shattered windows of nearby buildings and scattered debris, including body parts and oxygen cylinders. Some cylinder fragments reportedly landed in Kambala village, nearly a kilometre away.
Police evacuated nearby structures as a precaution, while firefighters and ambulances carried out rescue operations. The injured were rushed to a local hospital, and the deceased were sent for a post-mortem.
Officials said strict action will be taken if any negligence is found. The factory has been operational since 1993.
