A junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the Indian Army died after suffering a heart attack while on duty in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Poonch district on Saturday, officials said.
The officer, identified as Captain (Ordinary) Talib Hussain, was deployed at an Army post in the Khari area of Poonch district under the jurisdiction of Police Station Poonch in Haveli tehsil. Officials said he suffered a massive heart attack at the post and died on the spot.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated further proceedings as per protocol.
Jammu and Kashmir shares a 740-kilometre-long Line of Control (LoC) and a 240-kilometre-long international border. The LoC is guarded by the Army across districts including Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri and parts of Jammu, while the international border is secured by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Jammu, Samba and Kathua.
The Army and BSF remain deployed to prevent infiltration, cross-border smuggling and drone-based activities linked to terror outfits operating from across the border with support from the Pakistan Army.
In the hinterland, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security agencies, are engaged in anti-terror operations. Under a revised security strategy, forces are targeting not only terrorists but also their over-ground workers, sympathisers, drug smugglers and hawala networks.
Officials said the approach focuses on dismantling the entire infrastructure that supports terrorism, rather than limiting action to armed militants. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has repeatedly directed security forces to adopt this holistic strategy to curb the broader ecosystem that fuels terrorism in the region.
