On the 18th anniversary of the Nandigram tragedy, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee said the people of West Bengal will teach the BJP a lesson just as they did the Left Front in 2011.
Instead of directly naming the BJP, he referred to the party as &ldquo;the zamindars of Delhi,&rdquo; warning that Bengal would resist attempts to undermine democracy. &ldquo;Bengal taught the Left Front a lesson it will never forget. Today, we send the same message to the zamindars of Delhi. Bengal will resist, relentlessly and resolutely. We will crush their arrogance in the ballot box and consign this politics of exclusion to the dustbin of history,&rdquo; Banerjee said in a social media post.
He sharply criticised the ongoing Special Intensive Revision by the Election Commission, calling it &ldquo;silent invisible rigging&rdquo; and comparing it to the &ldquo;scientific rigging&rdquo; employed by the Left Front before 2011.
Recalling the events of 2007, Banerjee said, &ldquo;On this fateful day, the brave people of Nandigram rose against the barbaric attempt by the then Left Front government to snatch away their land, dignity, and right to live with honour. Only the face of the oppressor has changed; the oppression remains the same. The &lsquo;harmads&rsquo; of yesterday have returned as the &lsquo;jallads of today.&rsquo; Where once the Left Front relied on covert, &lsquo;scientific rigging,&rsquo; the present regime resorts to silent invisible rigging.&rdquo;
The Nandigram movement arose in 2007 as a protest against land acquisition for a proposed chemical hub. Protesters, mainly led by the Trinamool Congress, cut off access to the area. Police action to reclaim the region led to clashes, resulting in 14 deaths. The incident is widely seen as a turning point that ended the Left Front&rsquo;s 24-year rule and paved the way for Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership in 2011.
