The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has provided the Delhi Police with a list of around 5,000 Pakistani nationals living in the national capital, with the aim of ensuring their repatriation to Pakistan. This move follows a directive from the central government, triggered by a recent terrorist attack on tourists in the Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir.
The list, which was compiled by the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), has been shared with the special branch of the Delhi Police. It has also been forwarded to the concerned districts for further verification and identification of the individuals.
Among those listed are Hindu-Pakistani nationals who hold Long-Term Visas (LTVs) and are exempt from this directive. "The list has been handed over to the district concerned for verification, and we have asked the Pakistani nationals to return to their homeland. Central and North East districts have a high number of Pakistani nationals residing in these areas," said a senior official.
The official further stated that a meeting had been convened to address the matter, and the Delhi Police has been instructed to take immediate action. Senior officers are actively monitoring the situation.
The special branch of the Delhi Police and the IB officers have been tasked with gathering information on the Pakistani nationals residing in Delhi and requesting them to leave the country as soon as possible.&nbsp;
Another officer confirmed that the list includes two separate groups: one of 3,000 nationals and another of 2,000. Some names overlap, and the verification process is ongoing, as many Pakistani nationals may have already departed.
On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order revoking the visas of Pakistani nationals, except for those holding Medical, Diplomatic, or Long-Term Visas. The new policy came into effect on April 27, 2025, and medical visas will also expire on April 29, 2025. The government later clarified that Long-Term Visas already granted to Hindu-Pakistani nationals would remain valid.
Estimates suggest that approximately 900 Pakistani nationals reside near Majnu Ka Tila and between 600 to 700 near the Signature Bridge in Delhi.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, police have begun a statewide initiative to identify Pakistani nationals living in various cities across the state. According to the state home department, there are currently 5,023 Pakistani nationals residing in Maharashtra on various visas.
Nagpur has the highest concentration of these individuals, with 2,458 Pakistani nationals, followed by Thane (1,106), Jalgaon (393), Pimpri Chinchwad (290), and Navi Mumbai (239).
Maharashtra Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Ramdas Kadam, confirmed on Saturday that around 5,000 Pakistani nationals are living in the state.
Kadam explained that approximately 1,000 of these individuals hold short-term visas and have been instructed to leave India in accordance with the central government's recent directive. "Some Pakistani nationals have been living in India for 8 to 10 years, while others are married to Indian citizens or have surrendered their Pakistani passports in order to apply for Indian citizenship. The Long-Term Visas granted to mostly Hindu Pakistani nationals will remain valid, allowing them to stay," Kadam added.
According to the minister, roughly 4,000 individuals hold long-term visas, while about 1,000 Pakistani nationals are in Maharashtra on SAARC visas, involved in activities such as film production, journalism, medical treatment, or personal business. Those holding short-term visas have been given a deadline of April 27 to leave, and medical visa holders have been granted an extension until April 29, 2025.
State home ministry data reveals that 2,088 Pakistani nationals are overstaying their visas, with their applications for extensions still under review. Meanwhile, 34 Pakistani nationals are in the state illegally.&nbsp;
Three individuals are currently incarcerated&mdash;two under Mumbai Rail Police jurisdiction and one under Pune city police. Additionally, 107 Pakistani nationals have gone underground after their arrival in Maharashtra, with Nagpur accounting for the highest number of 25, followed by Thane (33), Raigad (11), and Pune city (9).
In terms of valid visas, 51 Pakistani nationals are currently holding documents across Maharashtra. In Pune, there are 114 Pakistani nationals, of whom 80 are allowed to stay on a year-to-year basis, 24 are overstaying without authorization, one is in prison, and nine have gone underground.&nbsp;
In Pimpri Chinchwad, 290 Pakistani nationals are residing, with nine permitted to stay on a year-to-year basis, 277 overstaying with pending extension applications, and four staying on valid visas. No Pakistani nationals have been reported in Pune rural jurisdiction.
The Pune City Police have stated that they are compiling updated data and will provide further details once the process is completed.
Following the recent terror attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to chief ministers across India, instructing them to identify and deport Pakistani nationals living without proper authorization.
On Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a visit to Pune, confirmed that the expulsion process for Pakistani citizens had already begun. "Pakistani nationals who are residing illegally in the country will be located and dealt with soon," Fadnavis stated. "The expulsion process has already begun," he added, emphasizing that strict legal action would be taken against those overstaying without authorization.
Fadnavis also confirmed that the Centre had decided to suspend visa services for Pakistani nationals and revoke all existing valid visas issued to them.&nbsp;
Later in the day, the Chief Minister visited the home of Kaustubh Ganbote in Kondhwa, Pune, to meet with his wife, Sangita, a survivor of the recent terror attack. He also visited the home of Santosh Jagdale in Karvenagar, where he met with the victim&rsquo;s wife, Pratibha, and daughter, Asavari.
Union Minister J P Nadda also visited the families of the victims in Pune on Saturday to offer his condolences. Earlier that day, Nadda had visited the Shrimant Dagdusheth Ganapati Temple in Pune and offered prayers.&nbsp;
Speaking to the press afterward, Nadda assured that India would deliver a strong and appropriate response to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack.
