The Delhi Police Special Cell claims to have foiled a major terror plot this week, arresting five men in coordinated raids that stretched across Delhi, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Acting on intelligence alerts, officers moved quickly over two days, picking up suspects said to be linked to modules inspired by global terror outfits.
The first arrests came on Wednesday when Aaftab was caught in southeast Delhi and Ashar Danish was detained in Ranchi. Later that night, another suspect, Abu Bakr alias Sufiyan, was taken into custody in Delhi. By Thursday, the operation expanded further, with one suspect picked up from Madhya Pradesh and another from Telangana. More individuals have been detained for questioning as teams continue to carry out raids in different parts of the country.
Investigators believe the group had been preparing to carry out blasts in Delhi and the surrounding region. From their hideouts, police recovered a range of materials that could be used to assemble improvised explosive devices. Among the items seized were hydrochloric and nitric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sulphur powder, copper sheets, and ball bearings, along with beakers, weighing machines, gloves, and protective masks. Circuit boards, diodes, and wires were also found, suggesting the suspects were experimenting with electronic triggers.
So far, questioning has revealed that the accused were exploring ways to assemble explosives and had discussed possible targets in crowded areas. While officials are still cautious about confirming the module&rsquo;s exact affiliations, initial suspicions point to influence from ISIS propaganda, possible ISI involvement, and connections to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent. A senior officer noted that the investigation is ongoing and said details of the wider network would be shared after interrogations are complete.
This is not the first time Delhi Police has uncovered such a module. Last year, a similar operation led to the arrest of six men and the detention of eight others from multiple states, all accused of being influenced by Al-Qaeda&rsquo;s ideology. The latest arrests suggest that the threat continues to evolve, with new recruits and networks emerging despite earlier crackdowns.
For now, the five suspects remain in custody, and investigators are racing to trace who guided them, who supplied the materials, and how close they came to turning their plans into reality.
